Black Scrollwork Hand-Tooled Leather Flask – 150 ml

Black on black. Nothing but the carving.

A 150 ml (5 oz) stainless steel flask wrapped in full grain leather, tooled by hand in our Jaipur workshop. Flowers and long scrolls are cut across the whole surface, then dyed a single deep black — so the pattern reads in light and shadow rather than colour. The only contrast is the white leather lacing running the top and bottom edges.

No motif, no paint. The plainest piece in the range and the one that shows the tooling best.

What Makes It Work

Hand-carved leather wrap. Western floral scrollwork with stippled backgrounds, cut and shaped by an artisan across the full body.

Single black finish. Dye applied over the finished carving. Because nothing is picked out in a second colour, the relief has to be cut deep enough to hold shadow — which is harder than it sounds.

White whipstitch lacing. Leather lace threaded by hand along the top and bottom borders. The only light on the piece.

150 ml (5 oz) stainless steel body. Slim curved profile that sits flat against a pocket. Single wall — not insulated.

Hinged screw cap. The cap stays attached on a swing arm, so there's nothing to set down and lose while you pour.

How to Use It

Pour through the funnel neck, thread the cap back down, fold the arm flat. Carry it in a jacket pocket, a bag, or a saddlebag.

150 ml is the pocket size — enough for the evening, not enough to be a bottle. This is the one to choose if you want the craft without the colour: black goes with a dinner jacket as easily as with denim.

Cleaning & Care

Wash the inside only. The leather wrap must never get wet. Hold the flask upright, pour water in through the neck, tip it out carefully so nothing runs down the outside, and wipe the neck and shoulder dry immediately.

Before first use. Fill through the neck with warm water and a drop of unscented dish soap. Cap, shake gently, empty, then rinse two or three more times. Stand upside down on a cloth, uncapped, until fully dry inside.

After each use. Empty straight away — don't leave spirits sitting in it for weeks. Rinse through the neck three or four times with warm water and leave uncapped to dry.

If it picks up an odour. Half-fill with warm water and a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda, cap, shake, leave an hour, then empty and rinse well.

Never do this. No dishwasher. No submerging. No boiling water, bleach, or abrasive brushes. Do not run the flask under a tap — water tracking under the leather wrap will lift it from the body and cannot be undone.

Outside of the flask. Wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth only. Condition every few months with a small amount of neutral leather balm, worked in gently along the carved lines. Keep balm off the white lacing, which shows marks. Avoid solvents and alcohol-based cleaners.

Spills. Wipe the outside immediately if anything runs down the side while pouring.

Storage. Store empty, dry, cool, and out of direct sun. Leave the cap loose so air can move through.

A note on wear. Black leather softens and gains a sheen with handling. The white lacing will mellow toward cream.
