Leather Care Instructions

Full-grain leather improves with use. These are the few things that keep it that way.

Every day

• Wipe with a soft dry cloth to lift dust before it settles into the stitching
• Empty the bag if it has been carrying anything heavy or sharp
• Let it dry naturally if it gets wet, away from heaters and direct sun. Never use a dryer.

Every six to twelve months

• Work a small amount of neutral leather conditioner in with a cloth, along the carved lines rather than across them
• Polish brass hardware with a soft cloth if you prefer it bright. Left alone it darkens into a patina, which most people come to prefer.

Hair-on hide

• Brush along the direction of the hair with a soft brush
• Spot clean with a barely damp cloth and never soak the panel
• Keep it out of heavy rain

Storage

• Store stuffed with tissue or cloth so the shape holds
• Use a breathable dust bag, never plastic, since leather needs air
• Keep it cool, dry and out of direct sunlight

What is normal

Leather darkens with handling. Hand-applied dye varies slightly from piece to piece. Hair-on hide sheds a little at first. Brass changes colour. None of these are faults, and all of them are why the bag looks better in three years than it does today.
